“They are the future of our Church and our Country.” This description of the young men and women entering military service, sent to me by a The Word Among Us reader who assists a chaplain at a large military installation, is an important reminder to me of what inspired The Word Among Us to launch our ministry to service men and women.

Our lives have been enriched by the entire family who make up the Partners team: you, the readers of The Word Among Us; the military chaplains and their assistants; and the brave and selfless men and women (mostly young men and women) who serve us in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

You know first hand how important prayer, Scripture, and the sacraments are in your own lives. That’s why together we have reached out to our sons and daughters, our granddaughters and grandsons, our brothers and sisters, and our friends and neighbors serving in the military. Without your prayers and support, nothing would have been attempted; nothing could have been sustained. We at The Word Among Us have been encouraged and inspired by the depth of your faith and love. Thank you.

And over these years, an extraordinary relationship has evolved. We began our efforts thinking that we would be ministering to the men and women serving in the military. We soon came to realize that through their testimony of faith, they are ministering both to you and to us. Both they and we have experienced your love, support, prayers, and encouragement. We have become a family.

All of us Partners accept as our own the Holy Father’s call: “I am on a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world. We have to regard ourselves as sealed, even branded, by this mission of bringing light, blessing, enlivening, raising up, healing and freeing” (The Joy of the Gospel, 273).

While a few short years ago there were over 400 Catholic chaplains serving the Archdiocese of the Military, today there are fewer than 250. Under extremely difficult circumstances and over huge distances, they are heroically serving 1.8 million Catholics worldwide. Through The Word Among Us, we are now helping these chaplains to bring God’s peace, presence, and love to more than 400 military locations, bases, ships, and hospitals worldwide every month. The Catholic military personnel include young people from all walks of life who have found a spiritual family through Partners. Yet so many more still need our help.

I invite you on this Fourth of July to take up this call anew. Let us pray for the chaplains and men and women of our military and give thanks for their faithful service. And I invite you to consider making a donation to Partners this month so that together we can bring the goodness of Jesus Christ to more and more of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

You may donate at our secure website, waupartners.org. Remember, until September 30, 2014, every donation of $100 or more will be matched by a group of generous donors. Give today, and double your impact. Your gift of $100 will become $200; $200 will become $400; and $250 will become $500. This is a great opportunity to provide twice as many people with the gift of The Word Among Us.

Thank you for your prayers and generous support for the men and women of our military. We at Partners are honored to pray every Tuesday for you and your intentions.

God bless you,
