“Once you were no people, but now you are God’s people; Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:10
As a young boy, I always dreaded Lent: with its meatless Fridays, no desserts, going to daily Mass, and worst of all, going to Confession! Lent seemed like an endurance test, with Easter as the reward at the finish line.
I could not have been more wrong! Lent is a season filled with joy and hope. Lent is our own personal invitation from Jesus to experience God’s mercy. Through the Church, God pleads with us to come and encounter Jesus, his Son.
Return to the LORD, your God, For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love.—Joel 2:13
At Partners, our greatest joy is to share the mercy of God with our brothers and sisters in Christ through The Word Among Us. And YOU make this possible. In 2014, thanks to you, we are now sending The Word Among Us to 94,000 men and women in difficult circumstances who are:
• Isolated in prison
“The men and women in the federal prison system here cherish The Word Among Us in both English and Spanish. Please express a big ‘Thank you’ to your donors from all of us chaplains for making sure this publication continues to serve the men and women behind the fence.” —Chaplain, Kentucky
• Lonely and away from home serving us in the Armed Forces
“We make this donation in furtherance of the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Words alone cannot express our gratitude for your efforts to care for the spiritual needs of military personnel deployed around the world. May God continue to bless The Word Among Us as you continue to do His will.” —Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Chapel, Virginia
• Frightened or troubled regarding a pregnancy
“Thank you for the Spanish and English copies of The Word Among Us you give to Guadalupe Pregnancy Services. Our clients look forward to them at each monthly visit. God bless you for this beautiful magazine.” —Louisa, California
But so many more are hungry to know Jesus and wait for the chance to receive The Word Among Us. Can you help us share God’s mercy with them this Lent?
Please prayerfully consider making this Lent an opportunity to share The Word Among Us magazine with others. Many will be blessed by your tax-deductible gift to Partners of $50, $100, $250, or whatever you can afford. For your convenience, you may donate online at our secure website: waupartners.org and click on “Make a Donation to Partners.”
An important way to support our brothers and sisters in Christ is by becoming a monthly donor. Donors give $15, $25, $50, or more each month. Many of you have already chosen to give this way. Some of you are opting to donate via automatic fund transfers from a credit or debit card—so there are no checks to write, and no reminder letters in the mail!
You can easily set this up online at our website. Just click on “Make a recurring donation.” It is such an easy way to give. Thank you for helping us to serve our brothers and sisters in need.
Many of you share with me your concerns and intentions needing prayer. We pray for you and your intentions every week here at Partners. During Lent a Mass will be offered for your special intentions at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C.
As the Partners family, let’s pray together for our loved ones and all those in need, that they might taste the joy of God’s mercy this Lent. Remember, Lent is NOT a burden—it is an invitation to encounter Jesus, God’s mercy in the flesh. We are blessed to have such a Savior!
